Cumann na mBunscoil Group D Final
22/10/19: O’Connor Park Tullamore
St. Broghan’s N.S. 5-6 (16)
Ballybryan N.S. 3-11 (17)
(Goals are worth 2 points in Cumann na mBunscoil)
We are very proud of our boy’s football team today, who played out a magnificent final against Ballybryan National School at O’Connor Park in Tullamore yesterday morning. Played in excellent conditions, both teams served up exciting and attacking football, showcasing a wide range of excellent skills. The game had everything, goals galore, brilliant saves, high catching, blocking, tackling, long range point kicking, and even converted 45’s, all played in a great spirit by each and every player on the field.
Ballybryan started the first half strongly, paying with a slight breeze, and were soon in the lead, with a fine taken goal and some excellent points giving them a 5 point advantage early on, which could have been more if it were not for a brilliant interception from Bracknagh goalkeeper, Ben Gurr. St. Broghan’s opened their account with an expertly taken Sean Wyer 45, after a brilliant run and shot from Ryan Quinn brought a great save from the Ballybryan goalkeeper. Bracknagh kept fighting against the breeze, with Quinn and Dermot Fitzpatrick causing endless trouble in the full forward line. A well taken score from John Dunne kept the scoreboard ticking over before Sean Wyer slammed home the first of his 4 goals to really bring Bracknagh back into the game.
This seemed to reawaken Ballybryan who responded with another goal, coupled with 2 excellent points. Sean Wyer again responded for Bracknagh, and after great work from Cathal Weldon and Diarmuid Conlan, he once more rattled the net. Ballybryan finished the scoring for the half with a further 2 points, to go in 5 points clear at the break.
The second half started at a frantic pace, with both sets of players giving their all. Defences were on top for the opening 20 minutes of the second period, with the teams only scoring 3 points apiece. Bracknagh’s defenders, Sean Dunne, Tadhg Weldon, Tadhg O’Neill, Lar Flood and Cathal Weldon, repelled attack after attack, aided by the hard-working midfield of Sean Wyer and Diarmuid Conlan and the non-stop running of John Dunne, James Dempsey and Jonathan Brazon. Bracknagh’s scores in this period came from 2 fine efforts from Sean Wyer and a superb Ryan Quinn free. Bracknagh were still in touch at this stage, until a breakaway Ballybryan goal 4 minutes from time seemed to put the game to bed.
These last 4 minutes though, were to prove as exciting and memorable as any game played in O’Connor Park in a long time. 7 points down, and needing goals, Bracknagh went for broke, and started the mayhem with a palmed Sean Wyer goal, after a pin-point pass from Diarmuid Conlan. Cathal Weldon then intercepted the subsequent kickout and delivered a scarcely believable long-range finish to the back of the net, to give the St. Broghan’s boys hope. Sean Wyer exploded into life once more, fielded a kickout, played a one two with Ryan Quinn and hit the net again to leave the minimum between the teams. The game had reached fever pitch, and the tension was turned up further when Sean Wyer converted a close-range free, to quite unbelievably, level up matters, with one minute remaining.
Ballybryan, however, steadied themselves and pushed on for one final raid, with a superb team move, resulting in a free to push them back into the lead. Bracknagh’s valiant effort ended with some excellent Ballybryan tackling in the middle of the field, winning them the ball back, and the final whistle being blown.
It was tough to take for our lads, after such an amazing effort to get themselves back into the game, but they can be so proud of themselves, not only after today, but after the way they have played and represented the school since the beginning of the year. The team is also hugely proud of it’s younger players, Brochan Carey, Micheal Conlan, Paddy Byrne, Daniel Whittle, Charlie Curran and James Brazon, who didn’t feature today, but have proved an excellent addition all year, with a superb attitude and work ethic.
Ballybryan are an excellent team, and this was the second brilliant game played out between the sides, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. Congratulations to them on an excellent victory. Many thanks also to Offaly Cumann na mBunscoil for organising such an excellent day out for the children .
Thank you also to Bracknagh GAA for their continued support and aid in developing Gaelic football in St. Broghan's National School, and to all the parents who make these games possible, providing transport and support to our players.
