Green Schools
St. Broghan’s N.S. is part of an international environmental education programme called Green Schools. This initiative is operated and co-ordinated by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce, in partnership with Local Authorities throughout the country. It is a long term programme that aims to foster environmental awareness in schools, and in the wider community. As part of this programme we have a recycling point in our school so please send in any unwanted phones, used batteries & ink cartridges and old stamps that you might have at home. We regularly hold clothes recycling days in conjunction with Lenrec Ltd., a clothes, textile and phone recycling company whose objectives include, endorsing the culture of re-using and recycling and reducing the number of items going to landfill sites.
There are 7 Green Flags in total, and they are awarded to schools upon completion of all elements of the Green Schools programme. Here at St. Broghan’s N.S. we have been part of this programme for a number of years and have 3 Green Flags, one for Litter and Waste, one for Energy and one for Water Conservation. Miss Murphy is the current Green Schools co-ordinator, and we continue to implement these themes around our school. We remain conscious of how we can save energy and water and keep our school grounds free from litter. We are currently working towards our fourth flag, for Sustainable Travel and recently held a competition in school to find a slogan for this theme. Congratulations to Conor in 5th Class who had the winning slogan, ‘Leave the car and be a star’.

We have been awarded our 3rd Green Schools Flag
We were recently awarded our 3rd Green Schools Flag for water conservation. 2 children along with Miss Murphy and Miss McLoughlin went to an awards ceremony in Athlone to collect the flag. Fr. Gaynor was then invited to raise the flag in the school on Wednesday June 17th. This was followed by a fun day for the children. They had a great day, enjoying a bouncing castle obstacle course and an ice cream from Mr. Softie's ice cream van. Well done to all involved, our hard work payed off!
